There's a setting on your iPhone that changes the meaning of the word "delete", and iOS most likely suggested you enable it on the exact day your storage first filled up.
It's Settings → Photos → Optimize iPhone Storage, and if your phone is chronically full, it's probably on.
What it does
With optimization enabled, your iPhone plays a clever trick: the full-resolution originals of your photos and videos are uploaded to iCloud, and your device keeps only lightweight previews. When you open a photo and zoom in, iOS quietly downloads the original in the background.
The savings are dramatic. A 4 MB photo might live on your device as a preview of a few hundred kilobytes. Multiply by twenty thousand photos and optimization is holding gigabytes of pressure off your device.
The confusing part
Here's where people get lost, and where photo cleaner apps earn angry reviews they don't quite deserve.
Say you delete 400 photos. With optimization on, those photos existed on your device as small previews, maybe 200 MB total. The originals, several gigabytes of them, lived in iCloud. So when the deletion completes (and you empty Recently Deleted):
- Your iCloud storage drops by several gigabytes
- Your device storage drops by a few hundred megabytes
If you were staring at the device storage bar expecting a miracle, it looks like nothing happened. The cleaning worked. The space came back where the photos actually were: in iCloud.
Why this still helps you
Freeing iCloud space is real money. If cleaning keeps you on the 50 GB plan instead of upgrading to 200 GB, that's a permanent discount on your monthly bill. And device space does recover too, gradually: with less pressure, iOS keeps fewer cached originals around.
How Sweep handles this
